RECLAIMING THE CITY

Redelijk Eigenzinnig / Reason and Engage (Vrije Universiteit Brussel) is an interdisciplinary course for students and a series of lectures and activities open to all. The third edition of Redelijk Eigenzinnig / Reason and Engage (VUB) with the title: RECLAIMING THE CITY explores scopes and impact of new technologies.

On Tuesday 21h of November 2017 Redelijk Eigenzinnig / Reason and Engage (VUB) proposes several activities to explore and experience the impact of new technologies on the urban public(s): Constant member Peter Westenberg will give a workshop 'exploring the urban WIFI'.
In this workshop we wonder how wifi-connections shape the urban public space. The workshop starts with a tour along Wi-Fi cameras in the BRONKS-area. Participants will discover digital artistic experiments in this neighborhood and will connect to an open access city guerilla server to leave their footprint in the urban wifi sphere.

Other activities include: the performance 'walking the line' (BENJAMIN VANDEWALLE), workshop '(dis)empowerment in a digital society' (ILSE MARIÁ‹N), workshop 'making a Citizen Observatory' (Jesse Zaman & Wolfgang de Meuter). Experiences & opinions will be exchanged and debated during the CLOSING DEBATE

This activity starts at BRONKS (Varkensmarkt 15 - 1000 Brussel) at 6PM.

Places are limited to 20 persons.

CCTV video Freedom Not Fear

Under the name Freedom Not Fear, "Defending fundamental rights in our networked world", three days of meetingsare organised that investigate the impact of EU gouvernemental surveillance measurements on our daily lives and how European policy making affects civil liberties.

In the framework of this event, the video Stare will be shown. This video was made by Constant in collaboration with the Ligue des droits de l'homme using video material that was captured from wireless surveillance camera's in Brussels.

Also a discussion is organised in which the Belgian Camera law is scrutinised. What proposals could turn this law into a functioning piece of legislation that respects the privacy sensitivity of the subject matter ?
What are activist views on the desirability of a law on cctv camera's ?

Dakar Routines de Rencontres

Tijdens een tiendaagse workshop werkte videomaker Peter Westenberg met zestien deelnemers aan korte video's met vrije software voor audio- en videomontage. De groep bestond uit radiomakers, theatermakers, cameramensen, acteurs en regisseurs die de gewoontes, gestes, gebruiken en ongeschreven regels onderzochten van 'de cultuur van de ontmoeting' in de straten van Dakar. De visuele resultaten werden online gepulbiceerd en getoond tijdens het 13de Verbindingen/Jonctions Festival in Brussel.

Bruxelles, comme toute autre ville européenne, est de plus en plus surveillée par des caméras. Des entreprises et individus dirigent leurs objectifs de plus en plus vers eux-mêmes, leurs propriétés et d'autres personnes. Des caméras de police surveillent des places et des rues. Ces yeux électroniques qui regardent en permanence cherchent les irrégularités, les déviations de la norme, des comportements non-ordinaires.

Pendant ces promenades expérimentales on sera guidé par l'oeil d'espion d'une caméra. Une recherche empirique sur comment leur présence dirige notre comportement en espace public. Déguisés comme touristes de ville et observateurs semi-neutres on s'appropriera l'oeil de la caméra afin de créer une oeuvre collective.

Brussels, like any other European city, is increasingly being surveiled by security camera's. Companies and individuals point their lenses at themselves, their property and at other people. Police camera's keep an eye on streets and squares. Those staring electronic eyes search for irregularities, deviations of the norm, unordinary behaviour.

During these experimental walks we'll be guided by the spying eye of the camera. An empirical investigation how their presence conducts our behavior in public space. Disguised as city-tourists and semi-neutral observers, we'll appropriate the camera eye for the purpose of creating a collective work.

De zone van Brussel die permanent bekeken wordt door
beveiligingscamera's breidt zich steeds verder uit. Bedrijven en
particulieren bewaken zichzelf, hun goederen en anderen; geautoriseerde
publieke camera's houden straten en pleinen in het oog. Al die starende
elektronische ogen speuren naar onregelmatigheden, afwijkingen,
uitzonderlijkheden die kunnen duiden op onraad, overtredingen en wangedrag.

Tijdens deze experimentele wandelingen lieten we ons leiden door het
wakende oog van de camera. Proefondervindelijk onderzochten we hoe hun
aanwezigheid in de openbare ruimte ons gedrag stuurt. Vermomd als
neutrale buitenstaanders, als stadstoeristen, veranderden we die blik van
richting en al wandelend maakten we een collectief werk.

Een workshop in twee delen:
In het eerste deel bouwen deelnemers hun eigen EMF antenne, die Elektro Magnetische straling hoorbaar maakt.
Vervolgens voeren de deelnemers met hun antenne's een collectieve urbane interventie uit in het centrum van Eindhoven.

Max. 15 deelnemers

Programma:

* Bouwen EMF antenne.
We starten met een presentatie / introductie over EMF die de wandeling en de workshop contextualiseert.
Daarna bouwt iedere deelnemer zijn / haar eigen antenne. Materiaal en gereedschap wordt voorzien.
Totale duur: 3 uur (10:00 - 13:00)

* EMF Orkest: Collectieve performance in Eindhoven.
Ervaar de stad als een elektro-magnetisch audio landschap. Wagens, bekabeling, straatverlichting, beveiligingsinstalaties, en vele andere elektrische apparaten zorgen ervoor dat urbane omgevingen gesatureerd zijn door elektro-magnetische stralen. Al wandelend scannen we de stad en maken die straling hoorbaar. We improviseren dissonante hamonieën door verchillende antenne's te combineren.

WORKSHOP AGENDA
June 30, 2010

A workshop in two parts led by Wendy Van Wynsberghe and Peter Westenberg, two core members of Constant, a Brussels-based organisation for art and media. During the first part participants will build their own EMF antennae that make electromagnetic fields audible.
After that participants will perform a collective urban intervention in the Eindhoven city centre.

* 10:00 - 13:00
Building EMF antennae.
The day will start off with a presentation and introduction to EMF to contextualise the walk and the workshop.
Then each participant builds his/her own antennae.
Materials will be provided.

* 14:00 - 17:00
EMF Orchestra: Collective performance in Eindhoven.
Experience the city as an electromagnetic audio landscape. Cars, wires, cables, street lights, security installations, and many other electronic devices saturate our urban environment with electromagnetic fields. Walking through the city, we will scan and make these fields audible. Dissonant harmonies will be improvised through the combination of different antennae.
