De ontwerpcaravan Open Source Publishing nodigt u uit voor een zomers experiment met ontwerponderwijs - van 26 tot en met 30 augustus 2013

De meeste ontwerpstudenten brengen een laptop mee naar school en creëren hun werk met behulp van digitale software tools. Maar hun hard-en software is een technologisch en cultureel erfgoed dat zelden kritisch wordt bevraagd en een potentieel dat onbenut blijft. Door vrije software te gebruiken en in contact te komen met de cultuur errond wordt een ontwerppraktijk mogelijk die een intiemere en meer experimentele relatie met zijn digitale gereedschapskist heeft.

Behalve implicaties voor de (grafische) ontwerppraktijk zelf, heeft de cultuur van vrije software ook gevolgen voor het traditionele onderwijsparadigma omdat kennis buiten institutionele kaders wordt uitgewisseld en deelnemers gemakkelijk van rol veranderen (ze zijn afwisselend docent, student, ontwikkelaar en gebruiker). Geinspireerd op hun reeks workshops en Print Parties stelt OSP daarom dit zomers schoolexperiment voor.

The design caravan Open Source Publishing invites you for a design education experiment this summer "” from 26 until 30 August 2013

By and large, graphic design students bring a laptop to school, and create their work using digital software tools. This hard- and software represents a technological and cultural heritage that is seldomly questioned, and a potential that goes unexploited. Using free and open source software and engaging in its culture provides an alternative by making a design practice possible with a more intimate and experimental relation to its toolbox.

Beyond the implications for design practice, the culture of free and open source software challenges traditional education paradigms because knowledge is exchanged outside institutional borders, and participants move between roles easily (teacher, student, developer, user). Following from their series of workshops and Print Parties, OSP proposes a summer school experiment.

"Cookbook files are open when there's a chance of working. The work is not technological in that nothing of this has not been done before. The literature that feeds into this has been contentionally written in the shall we say mmh street. The public space of technical forums is related in some way to network protocols. It could be good that these HTML files be exported into cookbooks. I don't like it when these books are sold. A standard regime of the kitchen is easier for the exiled to understand."

PA/PER VIEW: Assembly

For the annual art book fair PA/PER VIEW, Agency (Kobe Matthijs) speculates on the question: How to include book making in art practices? How are typeface designers, book binders, lay-outers, etc... taken into consideration by copyright law? Thing 001452 (Orion) and Thing 001535 (Introductory Language Work) will convene an assembly at PA/PER VIEW in order to bear witness. Agency has invited a diverse group of concerned guests to "translate" on these things: Thorsten Baensch (publisher Bartleby), Sari Depreeuw (legal scholar VUB), Manuel Raeder (graphic designer), OSP (Open Source Publishing: Ivan Monroy Lopez/Seb Sanfilippo/Femke Snelting/etc..), Ziga Testen (graphic designer), etc...

Voor de jaarlijkse kunstboekenbeurs PA/PER VIEW presenteerde Agentschap (Kobe Matthijs) dingen die speculeren omtrent de vraag: Hoe kan het maken van boeken worden opgenomen binnen kunstpraktijken? Hoe wordt de activiteit van letter ontwerpers, boekbinders, zetters, etc... benaderd door auteursrecht?

Tijdens PA/PER VIEW riepen Ding 001452 (Orion) en Ding 001535 (Introductory Language Work) op tot verzamelen om te kunnen getuigen. Agentschap vroeg een diverse groep van betrokken gasten om te "vertalen" voor deze dingen: Thorsten Baensch (uitgever Bartleby), Sari Depreeuw (rechst onderzoeker VUB), Manuel Raeder (grafisch ontwerper), OSP (Open Source Publishing: Ivan Monroy Lopez/Seb Sanfilippo/Femke Snelting/etc..), Ziga Testen (grafisch ontwerper), enz...

A two day workshop on F/LOSS cartographic tactics

Even if cartography is generally produced from a bird's eye perspective, details cannot be drawn from a remote location; they must be confirmed/corrected/added on the spot. The territory must be litteraly practised by annotating and drawing.

Working on location with territories and the people living onto it, offers both beautiful and efficient ways of exchanging practises of space, and builds connections while mediating localized knowledges. Being able to consult, create, publish and exchange maps, to have access to cartographic data and know precisely where the openings are is both a poetic and a political necessity.

OSP @ Open Design Week

Vijf leden van het ontwerpcollectief OSP reisden naar Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam om deel te nemen aan Open Design Week. Van 3 tot 10 april toerden ze door de Mekong Delta om kennis te maken met lokale F/LOSS-fans door middel van workshops, presentaties en een tentoonstelling. De tweede week was gereserveerd voor een intensieve werksessie met als doel samen met Aziatische en Europese deelnemers een font te ontwikkelen. Met dit lettertype produceerden ze ter plekke een publicatie.

OSP @ Open Design Week

5 members of the design-collective OSP travel to Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam to participate in Open Design Week. From 3-10 April they tour through the Mekong Delta to meet local F/LOSS fans through workshops, presentations and an exhibition. The second week is reserved for an intense work session with the aim to produce a collaborative font between Asian and European participants. This font will be used to produce a publication on-the-spot. Open Design Week is initiated by Hong Phuc Dang. She came to Brussels in 2010 for the 5th edition of the Libre Graphics Meeting.

Un atelier de deux jours sur les pratiques cartographiques Open Source à l'Israeli Center for Digital Art dans le cadre de la Conférence Internationale 'Open Sources versus Military Culture?' organisée par door Tsila Hassine & Shenkar Forum for Culture and Society, Jan van Eyck Academie, en collaboration avec the Israeli Center for Digital Art.

Même si la cartographie est généralement produite d'un point de vue surplombant, les détails ne peuvent pas etre dessinés de loin: ils doivent être confirmés/corrigés/ajoutés sur place.

Travailler in situ avec les gens et leurs territoires donne une belle opportunité d'échanger des pratiques de l'espace et d'établir des connections qui se nourissent du savoir local. Etre capable de consulter, créer, publier et échanger des cartes, d'avoir accès aux données cartographiques et de découvrir précisément où sont les ouvertures représente une nécessité à la fois poétique et politique.

Le thème de l'édition 2010 du festival Make Art est 'in-between design':
redécouvrir la collaboration dans l'art digital. OSP fera une presentation et participera à l'exposition avec les projets Nancy et Dingbat Liberation Fest III, une installation pour la création de polices d'ornementation distribuée.
