Ceci est une invitation pour venir célébrer avec nous, puisqu'on a une raison supplémentaire pour commencer 2015 avec des bulles!

Lors de l'édition finale des journées de rencontre Verbindingen/Jonctions en décembre 2013, on a invité une équipe de rapporteurs dédiés à documenter collectivement les ateliers et les conférences en utilisant la plateforme Etherpad.

Aujourd'hui, on est heureux.se de vous présenter la publication collective de 'Are You Being Served', réalisé par l'équipe de rapporteurs (Marloes De Valk, Madeleine Aktipy, Anne Laforet, An Mertens), avec le soutien joyeux de Michaela Lakova, Reni Hofmüller et Femke Snelting. La mise-en-page et l'outil collectif Ethertoff sont de la part de Open Source Publishing (Stephanie Vilayphiou et Eric Schrijver). L'environnement de travail approprié nous a été offert par De Pianofabriek KWP.

This is a warm invitation to celebrate. Yes, we have an extra reason to start 2015 with bubbles!

During the last edition of the meetingdays Verbindingen/Jonctions in December 2013 we invited a team of 'dedicated notetakers' to document the workshops and lectures using the collective platform Etherpad.

Now we're very pleased to present you the collective publication 'Are You Being Served', realised by the team of dedicated notetakers (Marloes De Valk, Madeleine Aktipy, Anne Laforet, An Mertens), with the joyful support of Michaela Lakova, Reni Hofmüller and Femke Snelting. The design and the collective tool Ethertoff were provided by Open Source Publishing (Stephanie Vilayphiou and Eric Schrijver). The perfect work environment for this was offered by De Pianofabriek KWP.

We're very happy to have exchanged with you and to be able to continue exchanging in 2015. That is yet another reason to invite you for a drink!

Tijdens de allerlaatste editie van de ontmoetingsdagen Verbindingen/Jonctions in december 2013 nodigden we de deelnemers uit om live nota's te nemen van workshops en lezingen op een collectieve Etherpad. Een team van 'toegewijde rapporteurs' verrichte een enorm werk.

De rapporteurs verzamelen voor een week in Kunstenwerkplaats De Pianofabriek, samen met een ontwerper, om op basis van deze nota's een collectieve publicatie te maken, on & offline. Als je zin hebt om als vrijwilliger deel te nemen aan dit proces, aarzel dan niet om een mailtje te sturen naar an/at/constantvzw/punt/org.

During the last edition of the meetingdays Verbindingen/Jonctions in December 2013 we invited the participants to collaborate with a team of 'dedicated notetakers' to report live on the workshops and lectures using the collective platform Etherpad. They did an enormous amount of work.

The notetakers will gather again in De Pianofabriek Kunstenwerkplaats during one week, together with a designer and some volunteers, with the plan to create a collective publication based on these notes. If you would like to join the process as a volunteer, do not hesitate to write a mail to an/at/constantvzw/dot/org.

Are You Being Served? An exhibition

Internet is becoming more and more densely populated with services that monitor data traffic, networks and users. Cloud computing services claim a good, safe and transparent use of your data, but these very data are stored in unknown places and 'served' back to you wherever and whenever you want.
The artists in this traveling exhibition do not sit on a cloud and like to keep an eye on their own data. They ask themselves : Who does that server really serve?

In December 2013 Constant, Association for Art and Media, organised 'Are You Being Served?', a 4-days gathering of digital artists, dates activists, lawyers and others who were interested in an ethical and experimental approach to digital network culture. Together they worked on the possibilities of
parallel analog networks, deep web, mesh, dark -net , tunneling and proxies . The mobile phones, the Kindles, the tablets and other tools that daily occupy your pockets are closed technological boxes that, according to the terms of use, you should surely not open. With the aid of free softwares and licenses, copy-left and F/LOSS culture, we try to establish a different relationship with this technology.

The artworks and documentation of the meeting presented in this exhibition, answer with humor and inventiveness to different questions: the stereotypical gender relations in IT environments, the power of 'root' users, the privacy of medical data, the interception of network traffic, the distribution and commercial appropriation of data generated by users.

The exhibition will be present as part of the 7th International Conference "Computers, Privacy & Data Protection: The Global Perspective" to be held from 22 to 24 January 2014 at the Halles de Schaerbeek in Brussels.

CPDP is a non profit platform originally founded in 2007 by research groups from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, the University of Namur and Tilburg University. Since 2011, CPDP exhibits works that question the issues of privacy, surveillance and art related to new technologies.

The fourtheenth edition of Verbindingen/Jonctions is dedicated to a feminist review of mesh- cloud- autonomous- and D.I.Y. servers. Welcome to four intense meetingdays mixing lectures, screenings, performances, discussions and workshops.

To stay connected across multiple devices, we have come to expect unlimited access, provided by companies that traffic large amounts of data as a result. The necessary infrastructure that is put in place effects our understanding of place, both virtually and physically and it has become increasingly difficult to be intimate with the technologies that we feel familiar with. We started to wonder about what would make current networking technologies into hospitable habitats for critique, as space for artists and solidarity, teaching and learning.

What does it mean to serve and to host? What should server technology of today be about? How to re-appropriate networks for creative experiment? How to invert, detour, parasite and deflate web 3.0 notions of 'service'?

Join fellow geek-artists, techno-fanatics, queer theoreticians and phone flashers and brainstorm with us! With amongst others: Reni Hofmueller, Domaine Public, BITNIK!, Maria Guggenbichler, Paul Otlet, Aymeric Mansoux, the Amazing Service Providing Robot and many others.

Presentation of V/J12 e-publication in Constant Variable

On the occasion of the Verbinding/Jonctions 13, Donatella Portoghese, Nicolas Malevé, Stephanie Villayphiou, Alex Leray and Gijs de Heij presented "By Data We Mean", an on-line edition of texts, images and reflections that followed from the previous edition of Jonctions/Verbindingen 12.

This publication collects the different texts that were produced for the lectures and presentation of VJ12. It also constitutes a platform for experiments. What becomes possible when texts are released under a free license? What happens when two texts apparently very different from each other, but with many points of contact at a second reading, are brought together, mixed, smashed, and suddenly acquire a completely different form and meaning? Isn't every text ambiguous and open to different interpretations? And how can the grey literature surrounding textual production influence the process of reading and decoding it?

Connection Protocols in Artefact 2012

As part of the Artefact Festival in Stuk Leuven, organised around 'The Social Contract', Constant will present Connection Protocols.

Not only people but also bots, search engines and spiders abide laws
and agreements. Whether we email, surf or chat ... rules and regulations are having an effect on our daily lives and on the way we move in public space. Which social behavior do governments, companies, regulators project on machines? What is the social contract written into standards and technological infrastructure?

In Connection Protocols, Constant gathers research material on how people, machines and environments connect with each other. This collage of artworks, notes, manuals, instructions, images and texts can be read as a publication that will be edited "live" during the festival period. With this living collection that moves along the steps of the STUK we try to balance 'soft' factors such as attraction,
affection, similarity and curiosity with the prescriptive and indisputable character of formatting, contracts and 'terms of use' documents.

Verbindingsprotocollen in Artefact 2012

Als deel van het Artefact Festival in Stuk Leuven, met als thema 'Het Sociale Contract', presenteert Constant 'Verbindingsprotocollen'.

Niet alleen mensen, maar ook bots, zoekmachines en spiders houden zich
aan wetten en afspraken. Zowel in het dagelijkse leven als in de
openbare ruimte, wanneer we emailen, surfen of chatten gelden
afspraken, normen, wetten en voorschriften. Welk sociaal gedrag
schrijven overheden, bedrijven, regulerende instanties aan machines
voor? Hoe is het sociaal contract ingeschreven in standaarden en
technologische infrastructuur?

In Verbindingsprotocollen brengt Constant onderzoeksmateriaal samen
over hoe mensen, machines, en omgevingen verbindingen met elkaar
aangaan. De collage van kunstwerken, notities, manuals, instructies,
beelden en teksten is te lezen als een ruimtelijke publicatie die
gedurende het festival "live" geredigeerd wordt door Constant. In een
levende verzameling die zich langs de trappen van het STUK beweegt
proberen we 'zachte' factoren zoals aantrekkingskracht, affectie,
gelijkenis en nieuwsgierigheid in balans te brengen met de 'hardheid'
en onomstotelijkheid van formatting, contracten en 'terms of use'
documenten.
