At the first OSP Public Meet you are invited to finally discover 9000 km of drawings, tools and stories. Interested in the libre? Curious about their practice? 19h30 Exiled Cuisine (Ivan Monroy Lopez, Mexico City) Lecture/performance + dinner. "Cookbook files are open when there's a chance of working. The work is not technological in that nothing of this has not been done before. The literature that feeds into this has been contentionally written in the shall we say mmh street. The public space of technical forums is related in some way to network protocols. It could be good that these HTML files be exported into cookbooks. I don't like it when these books are sold. A standard regime of the kitchen is easier for the exiled to understand."

Libre Graphics Meeting 2011

OSP will participate in the 6th Libre Graphics Meeting in Montreal with three talks and also co-organises a workshop weekend and an exhibition in StudioXX.

LGM is an opportunity for give software developers, artists, designers and other graphics professionals to collaborate and learn from each other. LGM emphasizes the sharing of collective creativity, innovation and ideas and is free for everyone to attend.

PA/PER VIEW: Assembly

For the annual art book fair PA/PER VIEW, Agency (Kobe Matthijs) speculates on the question: How to include book making in art practices? How are typeface designers, book binders, lay-outers, etc... taken into consideration by copyright law? Thing 001452 (Orion) and Thing 001535 (Introductory Language Work) will convene an assembly at PA/PER VIEW in order to bear witness. Agency has invited a diverse group of concerned guests to “translate” on these things: Thorsten Baensch (publisher Bartleby), Sari Depreeuw (legal scholar VUB), Manuel Raeder (graphic designer), OSP (Open Source Publishing: Ivan Monroy Lopez/Seb Sanfilippo/Femke Snelting/etc..), Ziga Testen (graphic designer), etc...

A two day workshop on F/LOSS cartographic tactics

Even if cartography is generally produced from a bird's eye perspective, details cannot be drawn from a remote location; they must be confirmed/corrected/added on the spot. The territory must be litteraly practised by annotating and drawing.

Working on location with territories and the people living onto it, offers both beautiful and efficient ways of exchanging practises of space, and builds connections while mediating localized knowledges. Being able to consult, create, publish and exchange maps, to have access to cartographic data and know precisely where the openings are is both a poetic and a political necessity.

OSP @ Open Design Week

5 members of the design-collective OSP travel to Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam to participate in Open Design Week. From 3-10 April they tour through the Mekong Delta to meet local F/LOSS fans through workshops, presentations and an exhibition. The second week is reserved for an intense work session with the aim to produce a collaborative font between Asian and European participants. This font will be used to produce a publication on-the-spot. Open Design Week is initiated by Hong Phuc Dang. She came to Brussels in 2010 for the 5th edition of the Libre Graphics Meeting.

LGM 2010: The Review

From May 27-30, more than 200 developers, designers and artists gathered in De Pianofabriek (Brussels) to discuss Free, Libre and Open Source Software for creative tools. Traveling from over 45 countries, the fifth edition of the Libre Graphics Meeting was an opportunity for collaborative work between users and developers of software for illustration, design, typography, performance and animation.

Publishing in convergence

As invited guest to the Empyre mailinglist, Andrew Murphie, Mat Wall‐Smith and OSP will discuss design in relation to this months' topic Publishing In Convergence.

From the introduction by Morgan Currie:

"Despite the recent hype around ebooks, the future of publishing remains uncertain. The growth in markets for electronic distribution has resulted in a messy and highly competitive ecology of digital rights management systems, conflicting file formats and devices, and an online book market driven by new players such as Google and Apple. Meanwhile, pirate networks for ‘liberated knowledge' have opened other avenues for delivering content (whether legal or not), while the open access movement has increasingly consolidated as a legitimate alternative to corporate publishers. These are the realities of media convergence as perpetual crisis, or at least an ongoing entanglement of interests, and a situation full of potential for the future of the book."

Dingbats Liberation Fest III: Nancy

The Dingbats Liberation Fest adventure continues in Nancy.

Invited by the my.monkey gallery, OSP presents some of its works and will open a new workshop Dingbats Liberation Fest: into the grid. The collaborative font project Dingbats Liberation (DLFo) proposes to redraw the Dingbats and Miscellaneous Symbols from the Unicode charset.

After two first workshops, in Brussels (Verbindingen/Jonctions 12) and Utrecht (CASCO), the font already gathered more than 70 characters. Come and add your version!

What happens when a talented team of illustrators, graphic designers and graffiti artists starts working with Open Source softwares like Gimp, Inkscape and FontForge? What if the experimental results are printed on the press of Plus-tôt Te Laat and then handed over to students of the Ecole de Recherche Graphique (ERG) for a make over? The results will be on show until June 4 show at De Pianofabriek in the context of the Libre Graphics Meeting 2010.

Fernand Baudin Prize 2009

The Constant book Tracks in elect(ron)ic fields won a Fernand Baudin Prize 2009. This exhibition in Brussels presents the bookawards and other nominations.

Opening, award ceremony of the honorary diploma's and release of the catalogue: 25th of February 2010 at 6 pm

For it's second edition 2009-2010, the Prize was extended to the Walloon Region thanks to the support of Wallonia-Brussels International (WBI) and the Walloon Agency for Export and Foreign Investments (AWEX).

The international jury convened at the Erg to choose the most beautiful books that were designed, published or printed in Brussels and Wallonia in 2009.

The jury consisted of the following six members:

Roger WILLEMS, graphic artist, publisher, chairman of the Jury (NL)

Willem OOREBEEK, artist, teacher (NL)

Jean-Marie COURANT, graphic artist, curator, teacher (F)

David POULLARD, typographer, teacher (F)

Jan WOUTER HELSPEEL, graphic artist, teacher (B)

Drita KOTAJI, book historian, teacher (B)

The 83 received books, presented by category (general literature (fiction), general literature (non-fiction), artists' books, art books and catalogues, architecture and urban planning books, books for young people and comic books) were placed at the disposal of the jury.

20 books were nominated and the Prize was awarded to 10 books, that were given the title “Winner of the Fernand Baudin Prize 2009”. The three parties of the award winning book; the graphic designer, the publisher and the printer, will receive an honorary diploma.

Puerto Cookbook

Re-Print party: Quatre Quarts II

In the context of Open course / Open source, OSP performs a re-enactment of a print party that happened almost a year ago at the same location. OSP will change roles to serve another assorted collection of stories about engineered fonts, a live cooking class (nothing prepared earlier), 9 new numbers designed in Inkscape and FontForge, a new 16 page booklet in Scribus, and of course once again: commandline imposition + printing.
