The aim of the project is to compose a dictionary of sounds of the twenty-first century specific to any neighborhood of a big city, fed by multiple influences, open to changing, flexible and organic. A dictionary who doesn’t belong to anyone, but to which different groups can identify themselves. The Schaerbeek’s language, like Esperanto, is artificial and pursue the same goal: to foster communications between different communities. Unlike Esperanto, however, this language would not be the creation of a single person, but of anybody who is connected to Schaerbeek. This language will have an international character like Esperanto, but unlike the latter, it will not be entirely “neutral” because all the people, countries, cultures and religions, living together in the neighborhood Navez-Portaels or in Schaerbeek in general will enrich it.
In practice
For two years we organize meetings between local residents to collect words to add to the dictionary. Each meeting is followed by a radio program around the theme, broadcast on radio Paniek, FM 105.4. Professionals artists & amateurs are invited to work with the words of the dictionary. All works will be presented at an event in spring 2012.
